A Unit Secretary (Health Unit Coordinator) is responsible for performing clerical duties, facilitating effective written and verbal communication, and contributing to a smooth functioning, well-equipped unit.
In this position you will:
Coordinates patient records appropriately. Standards:
Initiates the patient chart and/or kardexes accurately.
Maintains patient charts, reports stat orders, and keeps patient records (i.e. kardex, census record) current under the supervision of the charge nurse.
Accurately and promptly transcribes physicians' orders.
Files lab and x-ray reports and other appropriate material in patients' charts, after review of registered nurse.
Requests previous medical records upon arrival of patient.
Contributes to a smooth functioning and well-equipped unit. Standards:
Maintains unit patient log records accurately, completely, and legibly.
Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in ordering and maintaining supplies and forms.
Orders supplies for the unit and keeps nursing station stocked appropriately as assigned.
Communicates with care delivery team any delays that may disrupt services.
Performs errands as needed for the unit.
Participates in quality management activities including data compilation.
Assists with the appropriate notifications, paperwork, and procedures for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths.
Maintains a clean and organized nursing station.
Responsible for accurate, courteous, and prompt unit communications. Standards:
Answers telephone by fourth ring.
Communicates phone messages/calls courteously, accurately, and promptly.
Answers nurse call system courteously, accurately, and promptly.
Relays patient’s requests courteously, accurately and promptly.
Demonstrates willingness to seek appropriate resources for inquiries.
Conveys appropriate information to patients and individuals after confirming accuracy of information.
Communicates in a calm, professional and discreet manner.
Contributes/promotes adaptability to the unit. Standards:
Demonstrates ability to work with detail and constant interruptions.
Plans, prioritizes, and organizes work efficiently.
Is willing to float to other units and/or other shifts when the need arises.
Maintains composure and demonstrates professionalism in unplanned situations.
Organizes time so as to minimize time away from nursing unit.
Participates in the orientation/cross training of staff.
Identifies and reports issues or concerns and provides recommendations for resolution.
Performs cardiac monitoring related activities. Standards:
Mounts clear readable rhythm strips every four hours during shift and PRN.
Evaluates and resets all alarms in a timely manner.
Requests staff to adjust leads to maintain quality tracings.
Identifies changes in heart rate and promptly notifies patient’s nurse of these changes.
Identifies life-threatening rhythms and promptly notifies patient’s nurse of these changes
Demonstrates awareness of patient’s code status.
Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of cardiac monitoring equipment.
Coordinates the upkeep and maintenance of the telemetry units.
Attends the mandatory professional education day and competency testing and other hospital required in-services.
Required qualification for this position include:
- Proficiency in medical terminology required in order to transcribe physicians' orders legibly, using correct grammar
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
1 year recent experience as a Unit Secretary or experience in a similar position
Cardiac monitor equipment experience
Certified Health Unit Clerk certification
Monitor tech skills
Proficiency in multiple line phone system and computer skills
